Container of Love

Container of Love was born out of the critical needs of the schools and communities we support. Our objective is to annually fill a 40ft container with essential items which we import each summer before the academic year begins. The container contains school supplies, clothing, toiletries, medical equipment, educational tools, non-perishable food, and more. Following distribution, Hanover Charities gifts the container to a community site to facilitate learning in Hanover.

Hopewell SportsCommunity Centre

Regular visitors to our part of Jamaica may have noticed there is a football field at the westend of Hopewell.   It was a project of Hanover Charities in 1976 but had fallen into total disrepair. Nan Brenninkmeyer, a Round Hill shareholder and generous supporter of Hanover Charities, has spearheaded a project to not just revive this field, but add to it, making it a true sporting complex.  “The clubhouse has been declared unsafe; the football field needs repairing, and we need to build a structure which will have shower and changing facilities,” she says.  In addition, the complex would have an area where the children of Hopewell can do homework and other wholesome activities. As a result of the tremendous support from our donors, the Hopewell Sports & Community Centre, formerly called the Orchard Sports Complex, saw its grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting take place on Friday, November 9th, 2018. The centre offers the following: Community/Homework Centre Computer Lab Two Offices (Hanover Charities & Jaycees) Multi-purpose Hall with veranda Basketball and Netball Courts New Concrete Bleachers Football Field Lennox Lewis League of Champions Boxing Gym External Bathrooms Solar Panels

Westhaven Children’s Home

Up in the remote hills of Hanover Parish is a custodial home that exemplifies St. Matthew’s admonition: “In as much as you did it to one of the least of these, my brothers, you did it to me.” Westhaven Children’s Home surely houses some of the “least of these” in terms of physical and mental health coupled with a history of neglect, abandonment, abuse, and lack of love. The Home was started in 1981 by a group of concerned citizens who had worked with the Family Court and Children’s Services. Aware that there were disabled and abandoned children needing not just housing but also love, volunteers were able to open the first cottage in 1981. Now there are four fully operational cottages with 82 children and young adults, ranging from four years to 37 years. While the home is licensed under the Ministry of Health, the amount of support is “woefully inadequate,” according to Mrs. Gloria Veira, founder and administrator of Westhaven. Hanover Charities is one of the larger supporters, giving in 2016 JA$1 million (US$8,333). The needs at the Home are great, for everything from adult diapers, wheelchairs, sheets and towels to volunteers to spend time with these disadvanted children and young adults. Mrs. Veira assures us, “we are grateful for any and everything.” To donate funds, please click here. To donate other goods or services, please contact Katrin Casserly
